Leading means stepping out of your comfort zone

First published almost three years ago, Brene Brown’s bestseller is not your typical business book. Dare to Lead presents an alternative view on what leaders can be today. It sums up what many people at the top do to succeed. Here are some of the things you’ll learn from the book: It’s okay to be human. People see leaders as aloof beings who are only concerned with the bottom line. Organizational heads tend to perpetuate this truth when they consciously distance themselves from their subordinates. Increasing engagement doesn’t mean losing one’s authority or building familiarity. When leaders tear down walls that separate them, employees are more likely to identify with them. Lead with courage. Leaders make mistakes, but the best ones admit and take responsibility for them.  It also takes courage to follow a new course when the business environment demands it. Courage is also required when leaders let their guard down. It’s never a show of weakness to show emotion or practice empathy.  Employees look up to their superiors during difficult times. When they are unsure of the outcome, leaders exhibit bravery and face challenges head-on. Lead by your values. Authentic leaders exhibit their beliefs through their words and actions. They remain steadfast when making difficult decisions, regardless of the consequences.  They can lose their popularity but not their integrity. Employees may sometimes disagree with their leaders. But they’ll continue to respect them. Listen more. How can people trust leaders who do not communicate with them? Memos, e-mails, newsletters, and announcements have their place in organizations. These are one way, however. People at the top should go out of their way to spend time listening to their employees.  Communication is two-way in successful organizations. Leaders engage in dialogues more than monologues. They want to hear others’ opinions because they may learn from them. Be vulnerable. Perhaps this is the core theme of Ms. Brown’s book. People should express more emotions to show their true selves. Leading by example, leaders encourage their employees to be more honest in the workplace. Being vulnerable doesn’t mean taking advantage of other people. It means not being afraid of judgment or criticism. When there’s a culture of authenticity, employees become more comfortable with being themselves at work.  There’s an openness that makes communication less difficult and ideas more free-flowing. One of the hurdles organizations face is the lack of human connections. People are unable to communicate openly and include others in conversations. Maybe leaders can try a different approach by encouraging a bit of vulnerability in the workplace. They might accomplish more than they expected by doing so.

5 Ways To Find Fulfillment In Your Success

It’s a crazy world we live in. In this environment of commercialism and materialism, we’ve been brainwashed into thinking that true happiness comes from external objects. At some point in your life, you will notice that no matter how much wealth we acquire, there’s always something better.  Even after buying that brand new, exquisitely stunning BMW or that classic Southern mansion by the sea in Savannah, Georgia, they lose their appeal after some time and we go looking for something else.  The truth is, happiness or fulfillment comes from within ourselves… from seeing ourselves grow, from pausing and reflecting on the significant changes in our lives.  This is when we feel a great sense of meaning and purpose. Fulfillment doesn’t come from the exterior. It comes from being thankful for personal milestones we go through which motivates us, even more, to go on driving for success. This makes all our efforts and sacrifices worthwhile. Five ways to achieve success and discover fulfillment: Psych yourself up for personal and professional growth – Fulfillment comes out as a cause of action. So, get yourself deeply involved in actions leading to self-improvement. Have a thirst for knowledge. Keep your mind open to new thoughts and new ideas. YOU … can always become a better person. Share your blessings and skills with others –  Get into the charity habit.  Contribute to others. Help others and make yourself feel good. Live for today – Immerse yourself in the present moment. It should boost your productivity and happiness because the more you’re able to connect and hold on to the stillness of the here and now, the lower your anxiety and frustration become … and the greater your focus. Drop your sense of entitlement – Forget the “I should have had that..” or “I should have been credited for that” … and a lot of other “I should have…” Instead, shift your concentration on what is and be grateful for what you have rather than brood and mope around over what you don’t have. Be in touch with something bigger than you. When you immerse yourself in the wonder of Mother Nature with the majesty of its towering mountains and the vastness of its oceans, you get to realize over time how small and meaningless your complaints really are. Remember not to give your problems any power to make them bigger than they need to be. These then are the five ways to experience true fulfillment and happiness.  So, starting today, stop expecting. Instead, start appreciating.

Women Stay Mentally Sharp Longer Than Men

Before you guys start ganging up on me, take a look at what the experts have found out about the subject in several studies. Scientists have observed that women who are generally healthy have a “metabolic brain age” that is consistently younger than men of the same chronological age. What this finding indicates is that the changes and variations that occur when the brain uses energy over a person’s lifetime actually proceed more gradually in women than they do in men. While the research guys are clueless as to its medical consequences and implications, they say that this may help explain why, mentally, healthy females tend to stay sharp longer than males, Marcus Raichle, a neurobiologist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, says … brain metabolism changes with age. But his group of researchers also noticed that these changes boiled down to gender. In other words, when they started looking into how brain metabolism predicts a person’s age, the women came out looking about four years younger than they really are. How did they do it? – What the scientists did was to apply a brain-scanning approach called “Position Emission Tomography”.  It measured the flow of oxygen and glucose to the brains of one hundred twenty-one (121) women and eighty-four (84) men aged 20-82. This scanning technique showed how sugar was being converted into energy in the various parts of the respondents’ brains.  In infants and young kids, this process known as Aerobic Glycolysis is increased by nature to grow and develop the children’s brains.  This is scaled down however as they become adolescents and young men and women and it goes down steadily till it reaches a real low level when they reach their sixties. To see how this brain metabolism differed between the sexes, the researchers used a computer algorithm leading to the prediction of the respondents’ ages using their brain scans. So, what came out? The program estimated the men’s ages accurately. But it showed the women’s brains, on average, to be three-point eight (3.8) years younger than their real ages. Medically, the researches don’t know exactly what this means and intend to pursue further research on the subject. For now, they can only speculate that perhaps, low glucose metabolism in certain parts of the brain becomes more prone to memory loss and neurodegenerative diseases as a person gets older.
