Help Your Employees Set And Define Better Goals

It oftentimes happens that with the start of a calendar new year or a fiscal year among business companies, employers set up their employees to develop and achieve goals. Left to their own devices, these guys could pretty well be writing down traditional new year’s resolutions as in reducing weight or refraining from going to sleazy girlie bars or, they may simply go through the motion of listing down objectives as nonchalantly as doing the grocery list. Of course, it’s got to be a little more serious than that. Reason enough why employers should play a role in their staff’s goal setting. Here are several ways you (as a business owner or entrepreneur with employees) can help your guys set better goals: Reiterate the company’s mission. It’s funny. In a survey of three thousand US workers, only about four in ten know what their organization stands for and what makes their brand different from the rest. You have got to help employees better understand the over-all mission . Redefining this and sharing the company-wide goals will get your guys working towards goals that will run parallel to your company’s. Make the employee goal-setting a two-way affair. You can’t let this be the employee’s sole responsibility. You, as a manager have got to jump in and make it a collaborative process. Why? Because it’ll help to get those objectives more aligned with your company’s mission. Ensure you help make those goals as specific as possible as to include the who’s, what’s, when’s, where’s and why’s of it. And, use concrete numbers so you can quantify and measure the results in realistic terms. Set your employees up for success. Work out goals that are within reach or, you may want to break down long-term goals and set up timelines for what has to be done and when. This will make short-term, smaller goals more achievable which should provide the motivation to push on. Map out an achievement plan. Don’t stop at simply setting and defining goals with your employees. A goal achievement plan is essential as well. This is where you need to have control points as you get to know what needs to be accomplished for the quarter and how all concerned should actively work to address any issues that may have risen. This should also help to keep your guys on track. So you’ve been the conscientious manager who assisted the team members in the setting of goals. Now take a step back and review  what you’ve collaboratively put down. Honestly, ask yourself the question … “Are these the goals that will inspire passion among my team members? Will these drive them to go the extra mile?” If you’re getting affirmative answers, give yourself a pat on the back and treat yourself to the biggest ice cream cone at Dairy Queen. If not, I don’t have to tell you… it’s back to the drawing boards till you’ve got something that’ll fly!

Pause before giving up…The “why”?

When You’re Down and Feeling Like You Want to Give Up, Do Something About It! Nobody ever said life is a picnic. Sure, there are great times. Sure, there are fun times. But just as surely, there are also bad times. These are the days when you can’t help but ask .. why can’t I get this project running? When you’ve put in a lot of time and personal resources, almost literally blood, sweat and tears into an important venture and can’t seem to make it move, it’s easy to feel crushed and frustrated. This feeling can hit you so hard, you’d want to raise your hands in surrender, shouting I GIVE UP! Sometimes, this urge to throw in the towel can crop up with the most common activity of our everyday life …in your plan to eating healthier fruits and vegetables and getting rid of the junk food in the kitchen pantry … your entertaining thoughts of stopping going to the gym for your workouts, because you’re still as big as a house.  In fact, some people even opt to live like a recluse because dating and socializing don’t seem to be working for them, not being able to meet the right person. If you find yourself in such situations while trying to make positive changes in your life, DON’T GIVE UP! What can you do? Two things …. One, pause a while. Take a few minutes to remind yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing.  Perhaps, this project you’re deeply involved in holds a promise of supporting your family and allowing them to live a comfortable life. Your workouts and recently adopted healthy eating? Hey, you’d want to live long enough to see your kids grow up, playing the cello masterfully in their high school music class or be extremely proud to see your teen-age boy dunking that ball beautifully in an inter-school basketball competition. Or …maybe, you’d like to simply travel and experience the beauty of Tuscany in Italy and discover the excitement of game cock-fighting in Guadalajara, Mexico. Whatever it is, reminding yourself of these great reasons, when you’re getting that I-want-to-give-up feeling will help you to hang on and keep right on going. Two, think positively. Remember, tomorrow’s another day. When things seem to be heavy and difficult and you’re on the verge of giving up, think that tomorrow could be different from today. It could bring a big change, a new insight, a happening that could make what you’re doing a lot easier, a lot lighter. This happens all the time. You recall what the old folks say when you’ve got a problem? “Sleep over it. It’ll be better in the morning.” And it usually does! Michael Jordan anecdote Michael Jordan is one of the best, if not the best basketball player that ever lived. In his teen years, trying out for his school’s basketball team, the coach turned him down. The coach said Michael wasn’t good   Sources: My’s reference https://hbr.org/2015/03/positive-teams-are-more-productive

Achieve Your Goals: Write Yourself A “Hope Letter”

We’re now in the month of February, 2016. By this time achieving any of those New Year’s resolutions we all fastidiously made at the end of 2015 may be slowly fading from our consciousness and starting to settle in the dust bin of “here today and gone tomorrow” goals. According to a study conducted by the University of Scranton’s 2014 Journal of Clinical Psychology, about forty five percent (45%) of residents in the United States typically make New Year’s resolutions. But among these Americans, there is only an eight percent (8%) chance of anyone realizing their goals. The main reason for this was never cited, although most experts contend it has to do with the degree or intensity of a person’s resoluteness and persistence to pursue whatever it is they set their minds to achieve for themselves and for their loved ones. Is There A Better Way To Improve This Situation? And so, you just might be telling yourself … “Heck! There’s got to be a better way to make good, significant changes in my live!” And there is. The “Hope Letter” The Hope Letter is a simple uncomplicated exercise. It is powerful though. This stems from what C.R. Snyder, Ph.D. professor of Psychology at the University of Kansas developed and called the Hope theory. This says that by concentrating on three important elements, the achievement of goals happens. He identified these factors to be: Having a clear goal Having ways and means of achieving this goal Believing in your ability to reach this goal. Researchers have further revealed that persons who have high hopes are more likely to cope better with physical pain or life’s many frustrations. They also tend to be happier and more satisfied. Building on the work of mental health professionals, who, from as early as the 1950’s begun realizing the key role hope played in the achievement of dreams, some creative, smart executive coaches developed the Hope Letter. When we write down our hopes and dreams…when we write down the ways and means we shall achieve them, we, in fact, become more successful in making them come true. This hope letter has been used among these executive coaches’ clients and have been known to work. Here then are the easy-to-follow, step by step guide on making one: Put it down on paper. Write a letter addressed to yourself. Date it precisely one year into the future. Don’t put a limit on yourself. Take the time to imagine what the scenario will be if you achieved or accomplished all your goals. Take into consideration your job and career, your health and finances, your love-life, family and friends, fun and personal growth. Prompt yourself with “What do I hope to have accomplished this time in 2017?” You’ll need to be accountable for this. When you’re done with the letter, give it to a close friend, your wife or special girl, your coach or colleague and ask him/her to mail it back to you, one year from the date you wrote it. You can also send a digital letter on www.futureme.org, program it so you will receive it in one year!  Do this. When you get your letter back, you’ll be amazed at the number of things you shall have achieved, the reason being … when you set and write down your intentions, …your ways and methods of achieving them … your actions will naturally follow. Are all your goals … things you want to happen … do they happen, are they achieved? Not usually, but many do get realized. So, celebrate what you do achieve and learn from what you don’t and then write yourself another hope letter for the year ahead.
