Collaboration in a Hybrid Environment

Many people worldwide are opting to spend more time working at home. COVID 19 inadvertently highlighted the benefits of remote work. Saving money on fuel and office rent and flexible working hours makes a hybrid setting attractive today. But, of course, these are more reasons. There are downsides, however. Among these is the possible loss of collaboration among employees. But, there are ways to maintain cooperation: Discuss with employees how to maintain collaboration in a hybrid setting. Keeping communication lines open is one of the keys to effective collaboration. So, it’s an excellent idea to find out the individual circumstances of people who will work remotely. For instance, employees with families may have to attend to responsibilities before beginning work. However, with more flexible time, they can be more accommodating to their counterparts who are at the office. So, discuss when everyone should be available online. The last thing you want is to have colleagues listening in on a meeting that has no relevance to them. Set time for remote social interaction. Remember when employees hung out for a few minutes around the water cooler or at the lounge? This allowed interaction between people who didn’t have to talk shop during their breaks. This built friendships and improved relationships. How about encouraging the same aside from regular online meetings? Talk about the latest news, sports, trends, etc. Studies show that employees collaborate better with people they’re friends or comfortable with. Be open-minded. Traditionalists believe that eyes should be kept on employees constantly. For them, collaboration wouldn’t exist in a hybrid setting. Give it some time to work. Commit to it fully and explore ways to make it successful. It will take time for people to adapt to a hybrid setting. Let remote employees do their tasks without direct supervision. See what happens? When alone, it doesn’t mean they’re not collaborating. Remember that collaboration doesn’t mean that everyone should be in a synchronous state. Also, desired results can be achieved without real-time attendance online. For instance, finished tasks or communication could be sent by e-mail or other means.

Be the Boss Who Listens More

I’m sure you’ve been in situations where your boss talked endlessly, not giving you space to ask questions or offer suggestions. A supposed dialogue usually turned out to be a monologue. Maybe, you’re also unaware you’ve monopolized conversations with others. Instead of having a chat, you might be giving a speech. Do you ever notice this happening? If you believe you are often loquacious, you can temper the habit by understanding why. These are the reasons why people talk too much. They’re obsessive. They want to cover every small detail and micromanage everything. Some leaders want to re-affirm they’re in charge. They’re unaware that they talk too much. Nobody has called their attention to their verboseness. They’re aware, but they get carried away. They forget to press their internal pause button. They’re vain and believe they know all the answers. They’re unprepared and often say anything that comes to mind. You might have your own reasons why you tend to over-communicate. Leaders with high emotional intelligence have enough courage to admit their flaws and shortcomings. Once aware, they immediately correct themselves. However, it doesn’t end with talking less. It continues by listening more. Some claim that listening is a lost art. The digital age has changed behavior, including our ability to listen. According to Statista, time spent on social media increased every year. The worldwide average in 2019 is 2 hours and 24 minutes. Does this mean we are better listeners? The answer is no. Social media has given everyone a voice, but it made us talk more and listen less. It’s time to bring back two-way communication. Your success as a leader depends on how well you listen to your colleagues. Bosses who fail to listen often find themselves out the door. No one, including you, is expected to know everything. When you encourage feedback, you gain new ideas and valuable insight. “When you talk, you are only repeating what you know; but when you listen, you learn something new.” – The Dalai Lama Get into the habit of listening. It’s going to take a lot of effort if you wish to become a better listener. It’s bad enough to only retain 50% of what was said right after we hear it. This is compounded by what many call internal noise. We may be listening, but our attention isn’t 100% because our minds are focused on other things. This happens to everyone. However, with enough determination and by adopting the tips below, you can improve your listening skills. Shut out all distractions. When you are in a meeting or talking with just one person, pocket your smartphone or close your laptop’s lid. If you’re writing, put your pen down. Clear your mind and focus on the person who is talking. You might say this is easier said than done. Honestly, all it takes is a conscious effort to be attentive. Assign time for meetings. Dedicate the exact hour of the day when you need to talk to your colleagues or subordinates. Prepare what topics need to be discussed. Scheduling also means picking a convenient time for your employees. They may be busy too with their own responsibilities. Ask for comments. The best way is to address each person attending your meeting when asking for feedback. This will show you value their input. Make sure you’re taking notes of what they’re saying. Be mindful of others’ gestures. The body language of people speaks more than what they say. Remind yourself when it’s your turn to listen. When someone’s talking, tell yourself to listen. Remember, you’re surrounded by employees who may know better than you. Smart bosses recognize that two-way communication contributes to the success of an organization. They’re aware they don’t have a monopoly on the best ideas. Above all, they talk, listen, learn and reflect. When you do the same, you’re on your way to becoming a better boss.

A Bit of Worry is Good

There so much to be anxious about nowadays. According to the World Bank, the world is in a recession and COVID-19 is not only keeping a lot of people in poverty but creating a new class of poor. The adverse economic effects may already be affecting you. Stuff you weren’t worried about a year ago might be taking center stage in your life now. “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” is a Grammy Award-winning song by Bobby McFerrin. What would you think if you were told you can worry and be happy? You’d be skeptical, but honestly, this can be true for anybody. So, how about you turn the tables on anxiety? All you need to do is modify your thoughts and practice emotional intelligence. The causes and effects of worry There are medical conditions that give rise to anxiety. It’s not limited to the mind. A doctor may prescribe treatment that includes medication. On the other hand, external factors can cause anxiety. Stress at work, uncertainty, financial difficulties and relationships are examples. If left unchecked, these can dictate how you live your life. Sleepless nights, lack of focus, compulsiveness, nervousness, headaches and stomach pains are signs of an anxious person. In extreme cases, too much worry can become paralyzing. But, as you already know, inaction or reacting poorly to a situation often results from the mishandling of anxiety. How you deal with anxiety matters People cope with worries differently. Emotionally intelligent persons recognize the signs when they become anxious. They do not ignore their emotions but rather take stock of what they are feeling. Understanding leads to proper management of their worries. Here’s how they respond to anxiety. Anxiety as a Warning People have a built-in warning system primarily for survival. This can be traced back all the way to early humans. People with high EQ recognize that their anxiety might be telling them to exercise caution. Also, it might be alerting them to entirely avoid an act or a situation. How many times have you stopped yourself from entering a dark alley or an unknown environment because you started feeling apprehensive? Anxiety as Motivation Everyone worries about their health, especially during this pandemic. Emotionally intelligent people use anxiety as motivation. As a result, they exercise, observe health protocols and watch closely what they eat. They also motivate others to do the same. A survey of Asian-Pacific countries, published in May 2020, showed that most Vietnamese became more apprehensive because of the current pandemic. On the surface, this looked bad. But, the total COVID-19 cases in that nation were among the lowest in the region. In fact, Vietnam, which shares a long border with China, ranked 165th globally in case counts. It’s not a stretch to speculate that extreme worry played a role in driving the Vietnamese to act quickly and take drastic measures to contain the virus. A BBC article even stated that Vietnam’s overreaction saved the country from a full-blown outbreak. Anxiety encourages preparation Have you experienced stress before a meeting or an interview? Did it occur to you that you were worried because you were not fully prepared? When anxious, people with high EQ diligently prepare for any activity that has significance to their professional or personal lives. They don’t leave anything to chance. Conversely, in the event things don’t go their way, they are prepared for the worst. They accept failure and learn from it. It may even make them more anxious to do better in the future instead of wallowing in misery. Happy and successful people live with anxiety every day. But, they never let it control their lives. Don’t deny or ignore worry the next time you experience it. Instead, master and seek the good from it.
