“Eight Best Tips for Career Women”

It doesn’t matter in what field you may be pursuing your career – the arts, public service, the sciences, business management, information technology, math, engineering or any other male-dominated fields – these following tips should help strengthen your resolve to succeed in your professional life: Never say “You can’t do it.” Take a risk. The noted director of widely popular Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Ellen Stofan says she took a risk when offered her first management job. She didn’t think she was equipped to handle it but took on the job anyway and discovered she had the skills to make a success of it. Always have a plan B – If plan A doesn’t work, plan B or even plan C should give you another crack at making it work. Decide and concentrate on who you’re going to be and what you will contribute. Remember that your career is a path. You will have to think about the decisions you will have to make as part of traversing this path leading towards your development as a person and as a professional. Take note of how you spend your time – Log it down and note the big time-users and work out how you can reduce these so you can put in more time into those activities that increase your income, boost your well-being and strengthen your impact. Find ways to delegate or drop the other unnecessary stuff. Have a mindset anchored on growth – Angela Duckworth, author of GRIT; THE POWER OF PASSION AND PERSEVERANCE says, in essence, that having a growth mindset is important. It’s critical to have a hopeful, optimistic way of viewing your experiences and constantly looking to see what you can learn even during the bad times. Never stop learning. Develop your talent – It’s not a question of either you have it or you don’t. With practice and determination, you can develop a special talent you’re interested in. The trick is to work hard and practice to improve in something that has captured your heart. Learn how to communicate effectively – The Vice President and Global Head Honcho of Diversity and Inclusion for Lockheed, Martin, Rainia Washington say communication is one of her “3 C’s” for career success. Nothing beats having great skills in written and oral communications. Her other “2 C’s” are courage and character. It won’t hurt too to get some expert coaching when you can. Seize the opportunity when it comes up – Taking advantage of opportunities is key to every career woman’s growth and success. In the course of your work, identify the tasks or assignments that promise promotions, then ask for those. You will have to go beyond simply performing in your current position. You have got to show your potential. These are 8 important, tried, and tested tips, that have boosted women’s career in various fields. Try them and don’t worry too much about what your officemates may say, or even about not being liked. Not all successful women are liked.

Learning How To Manage Your Emotions Will Help You Achieve Inner Peace

“Whatever is begun in anger, ends in Shame.” It was Benjamin Franklin who said this. The wise man that he was, he knew, no doubt, that emotions shape not only our thoughts and behavior but our lives as well. “A calm mind leads directly to peace of mind.” It was Dalai Lama who said this. Wise as well, this world-famous Buddhist guru recommends we use logic and valid reasoning to create a frame of mind that will overcome destructive emotions. Through reasoning, love needs to be cultivated as an antidote to anger. The Dalai Lama continues to say that at one time in the past, compassion was seen as a sign of weakness, and anger was a sign of power and strength. He believes basic human nature is more compassionate and that this is the real basis of our hope. To have some sort of a road map for our emotions to develop a calm mind, the Dalai Lama had asked the well-known and highly respected emotion scientist, Dr. Paul Ekman to help create this guide to inner peace but that religion should be kept away from it. Some of the more relevant truths that came out of this unselfish efforts are: Emotions are instant responses of the brain. We don’t choose them. They simply happen to us with no exceptions. They are universal. They happen to all of us. What’s more, the facial signals that come with these emotions are the same in all cultures. We all experience the five basic emotions: anger, hatred, disgust, fear, and happiness. The factors and elements that trigger these emotions are universal as well. When are emotions destructive? Experts agree that all emotions are natural. They’re pretty normal and for the most part, are alright. They become destructive though when they are expressed inappropriately. In other words, it’s ok to be sad when a dear one passes away. But when this sadness turns into depression, it is inappropriate. Destructive emotions make the situation worse. They create long term harm. We see this in people who suffer from endless cynicism and keen hostility. This is a pattern that comes with fierce anger and frequent thoughts that people cannot be trusted. Chances are, these people who have acquired cynical hostility are more likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases and die at a younger age. To overcome destructive emotions, learn to build constructive emotions – Going through anger and hatred? Develop compassion. Try Love and patience. Destructive emotions occur on impulse. Usually, they’re founded on illogical reasoning and misconceptions. On the other hand, constructive emotions are practical and realistic. They’re based on valid observations and logical reasoning. What results from constructive emotions? A calm mind. We begin to see and experience life more realistically. And what kills a calm mind? Hatred, anger, greed, fear, suspicions and too much ambition. As a final call to adhere and develop constructive emotions, remember what the Dalai Lama says … Just as we learn about physical hygiene in the interest of good health, we now need to learn about emotional hygiene to achieve inner peace.

Positive Leadership: Its the best kind of leadership

A lot has been talked about and written about leadership. It’s not surprising. It’s such an important factor for success, depending on the kind of leadership existing in a place, it can make or break big business corporations, civic organizations, sports associations, small or medium size enterprises and even fund-raising charitable institutions and foundations … and for that matter, in a more expansive perspective, even governments. What exactly is positive leadership? In the context of running a business or a typical organization, profit or non-profit, Positive Leadership is about putting the emphasis on what elevates individuals, teams, and organizations. It’s about developing and gearing them up to achieve their full potential in addition to supporting and guiding them as they face everyday challenges they meet in the course of their personal and professional lives. Positive Leadership is about creating affirmative bias – in other words, a positive leader focuses on the strength and capabilities of his people and affirming their human potential. Rather than harping on weaknesses and inadequacies … rather than seeing a glass of water as being half empty, but seeing it half full, a positive leader centers his or her efforts on his team’s inherent goodness. He focuses on the positive, putting his/her heart and soul on what is going right in addition to what’s going wrong. Practicing all these, a good positive leader becomes effective and prone to achieving extraordinary positive performance on the job, resulting in outcomes that exceed expectations. How does one go about becoming a positive leader? If you’re running a small or a medium size business or some form of an organized outfit, here are three key strategies you can apply to achieve positive leadership in your workplace: Create a positive climate –While it’s not something you should ignore, try not to dwell too much on the hard, no-nonsense, profit-or-bust stuff. Instead, foster compassion. Thank your people for well-done jobs. Where they may have some shortcomings, learn to forgive while teaching them how to do things the right way. Create a two-way positive communication – This involves that popular adage about building bridges rather than walls. Make sure your feedback system is one that is constructive in nature identifying flaws and weaknesses without demoralization and advocating training and development for professional advancement. It won’t hurt too for you to do an objective and honest self-critique. It’ll keep you on track about achieving positive leadership. Practice a positive relationship with your people – Build a community-like workplace where you connect to your guys’ personal values. Work towards their physical and emotional well-being, they are after all, not cold robots. Reinforce their strengths, constantly looking for ways to build their energy and enthusiasm. These then are the three important strategies in achieving positive leadership. As you imbibe and adopt these, a positive performance, the extraordinary kind that goes beyond expectations, becomes almost inevitable.
